City of Wodonga Volunteer Celebration 2017
The Club owns a large catering van, a small BBQ trailer and mobile coolroom and caters for the public at community events.
Many shops in Wodonga sell Lion Mints at the counter to help raise funds for Lion projects.
Christmas Cakes: Every Christmas club members help to sell 800 specially made Lions Christmas Cake in our community. The sale of Christmas Cakes has helped raise money to support sight projects and to support our community.
Twice a month on a Sunday members deliver meals to home bound people from the kitchen at the Wodonga Hospital.
Library Book Home Service:
Like Meals-on-Wheels members deliver and collect library books each fortnight for people who are unable to visit the library. This is a great project which the Club has been running for many years.
From time to time Club members help people in our community to look after their gardens or visit members and their families when someone is not well.
Royal Children's Hospital Appeal:
Every year on Good Friday members of the Club help the Wodonga Fire Brigade with the counting of donations received for the Royal Children's Hospital Appeal. In 2018 we broke the $100,000 mark with a donation of $101080.00 from the Wodonga Community to the appeal. The appeal is well supported by communities all over Victoria because the hospital which is in Melbourne looks after children from all over our state.
The Club regularly collects used spectacles from optometrists. The used spectacles are passed on and then sent overseas to places like India and Africa to help people needing glasses but are not able to afford a new pair. We also collect hearing aids.
Eye screening in schools is provided by Lions free of charge.
Junior Public Speaking:
To give students in Primary Schools the chance to develop their ability to speak in public. This competition is run for primary students in Grades 3, 4, 5 & 6.
Youth of the Year:
Lions Youth of the Year is designed to encourage, foster and develop leadership in conjunction with other citizenship qualities in our youth, at the age when they are about to enter the fields of employment or higher education, and provides students with the incentive to pay greater attention to the general qualities, so vital in developing our youths into first class citizens.
Apart from working hard to support the community of Wodonga, members and their families enjoy a great Christmas party each year, visiting other clubs and occasionally going out somewhere different for a dinner or Sunday lunch.
Each year the Club donates nearly $35,000.00 back to the community on top of what goes to the Royal Children’s Hospital Appeal.
The programs and activities of the Lions Club of Wodonga are continually changing to meet new needs and greater demands, but our mission has never wavered: "We Serve.
